Hainan & Sanya Travel Guide for First-Time Visitors
Hainan is China's tropical island province in the South China Sea — palm-fringed beaches, warm winters and a resort scene that earns it the nickname "China's Hawaii." Its star is Sanya, the beach capital at the island's southern tip, where turquoise bays, big-brand resorts and duty-free malls sit under year-round sun. Here's how to plan a first trip.
Getting there & around
Most travelers fly straight into Sanya (airport code SYX); others land at Haikou in the north and ride the high-speed rail that rings the island's coastline. In Sanya, taxis, DiDi and buses connect the town with the main bays. Note the beaches are spread across a few separate bays, so pick your base carefully.
The beaches & bays
- Yalong Bay — the postcard beach: fine white sand, clear water, and the top resorts.
- Dadonghai — closest to downtown, lively and easy, good for a first dip.
- Haitang Bay — the luxury strip, home to the giant duty-free mall (Hainan's tax-free shopping is a draw in itself).
Nanshan & the Sea Guanyin
Sanya's most striking sight isn't a beach at all: the Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone, a sprawling seaside park of temples and gardens, crowned by the 108-metre Sea Guanyin — a triple-aspect statue of the goddess of mercy rising straight out of the ocean (it's the one framed by pagodas and palms above). It's an easy half-day, tropical gardens and all.
Beyond the beach: old Hainan
Hainan is more than resorts. Inland, the island keeps its Li and Miao minority villages, hot springs, and the rainforest peaks of Wuzhishan. History lovers can head to the Dongpo Academy (Dongpo Shuyuan) in Danzhou on the west coast, where the exiled Song-dynasty poet Su Dongpo taught around 1097 — a quiet complex of halls, gardens and bronze tableaux, far from the beach crowds.
Eat: seafood & tropical fruit
Hainan is a seafood island — point-and-pick your catch at a night-market stall and have it cooked to order. Try Wenchang chicken (one of the island's "four famous dishes"), and gorge on tropical fruit: mango, coconut, dragon fruit and mangosteen, cheaper and sweeter here than anywhere up north.
